Congress topic: «Pig production in Ukraine is strategic, promising and profitable»

For the second time congress «Profitable pig production», organized by leading agricultural consulting company «Dykun Global Consult» on the June, 14, 2010 in «Ukrayinskyy Dim» (Kyiv, Ukraine), united 250 participants. Among them there were 178 directors and specialists of agricultural enterprises.

Attention of international leaders of animal breeding industry (e.g. «Dig Dutchman Ukraine» LTD, «Biomin Ukraine» LTD, branch of «AL & Company» LTD (Olmix), DC «Alltech-Ukraine», Intervet Schering-Plough Animal Health, «Agravia AG» LTD, «Lesaffre Ukraine» LTD, EuroTier, «Eurovet» LTD, «High Agricultural Technologies» LTD, «Danosha» LTD, Agrosoft) proves that Ukrainian pig production industry has really great potential.

Congress organizers invited world-class specialists. Not every event can boast of such a constellation of gurus. Dirk Hesse and Heinz Strubenhoff (Germany), Bill Close (United Kingdom), Franz Waxennecker (Austria), Torben Andersen (Denmark), Patrick Grange (France), Kees Scheepens (Holland), Artur Loza, Vitaliy Piotrovych, Yuriy Tytechko (Ukraine).

Congress participants had a possibility to hear about all the world scale industry trends and prospects (D. Hesse) and received the evidence that Ukrainian pig breeding industry has great chances not only to satisfy the internal country needs (taking into account that internal demand for pork is greater than 1.2 mln. tonns per year) but also to compete with world leaders (A. Loza). It is interesting that even in countries where pig production is on a higher level and production costs are lower (Brazil, USA, China) Benjamin’s mess of costs is spent for feeds (F. Waxenncecker). Taking into consideration inevitable fluctuation of pork price, only 25% of farms are really profitable, the rest of farms are balancing on the edge.

Participants highly estimated the possibility to forecast the situation on grain, maize and soy markets (H. Strubenhoff) and forecasts for production costs changes in 2010. Also v. Bykov explained what governmental support will be given to pig production industry which is called strategic in Ukraine. T. Andersen revealed the possibilities of receiving investments from international funds. Some speeches were about good management practices (P. Grange), optimal feeding (B. Close, Y. Tytechko), and animal health (v. Piotrovych). Special attention was paid to the presentation «Pig signals» by world-class consultant K. Scheepens. All the participants received his book of the same name.

One of the most important steps to success is a team of educated and responsible specialists. As P. Grunge noticed, «Yacht will never win the competition if it has bad crew». To make right decisions and stay vigilant farmers should borrow the principles of K. Scheepens: «Always ask yourself if everything is alright or it could be even better». We hope that congress participants found the answers for the question how to make «even better» and will join mentioned 25% of profitable farms.

Earlier I have participated different seminars and congresses on dairy production and I can say that organization level here is not inferior to those mentioned above. We were glad to receive the invitation from company «Dykun» to visit the congress. I am surprised with the high level of congress organization, qualification of the speakers. First part of congress was more strategic,mostly aimed on directors/managers but I was interested in economic questions, optimal feeding questions. The biggest impressions I received from the second part of congress where lots of practical information was given. By the way I was amazed by the presentation of Kees Scheepens.

General questions on pig industry analytics weren’t of much interest to me as I monitor market situation, but lectures by Bill Close and Kees Scheepens really impressed me, I’d like to see more lectures like that.
